Surgoinsville's second Dollar General store, located on Forest View Drive near Highway 11-W on the far east end of town, opened its doors last Wednesday.
The Board of Mayor and Aldermen decided Thursday to wait a few weeks before possibly hiring temporary a temporary certified municipal finance officer to help overworked City Manager Mike Housewright.
City Manager Mike Housewright advised the public to direct all complaints and concerns about traffic pattern changes at the intersection of Main Street and Englewood Avenue to TDOT’s Trampus Grindstaff at (423) 928-6957.
Earlier this year the town's certified municipal financial officer (CMFO) Tammy Conner suffered a serious illness and has been off work. Mike housewright has been doing her job, as well as the duties of manager and city recorder.
The BMA currently meets the fourth Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m., and anyone familiar with Mount Carmel local government knows those meetings can become a bit heated and/or contentious at times.
City manager Mike Housewright described the proposal as a bare bones, no frills budget that maintains existing services with no extras. The good news is there's no proposed property tax increase, unlike last year’s 29 cent hike.
"I don't see how you can blame him for a budget that he did not create, that he walked into, and for debt that we incurred ourselves as a city before he was ever hired." — Alderman Jennifer Williams
