The East Tennessee State Univeristy Office of Multicultural Affairs did the second such visit to a school Friday, the earlier one having been Indian Trail Intermediate School in Johnson City.
The award is from the Univeristy of Tennessee, Knoxville.
Plans include staff training and annual retraining and an alarm and/or monitoring system that would cover side doors like the one Olivia Collins used to start her fourth-tenths-of-a-mile walk home.
Lincoln Elementary School pre-K student Olivia Collins got away during a bathroom break and walked a few blocks home, about four-tenths of a mile. “How did she get out of the whole entire school without anybody seeing her?” asked Alyssa Hunter, who found Olivia after a near hit by a vehicle and walked her the rest of the way home.
The tip was a concern about safety at Dobyns-Bennett High School, Robinson Middle and Lincoln Elementary, Kingsport City Schools Assistant Superintendent of Administration Any True said.
Teams from Adams, Jefferson, Lincoln and Jackson elementary schools; Robinson Middle; and Greene County’s Mosheim Elementary will participate.
Working with the school has enabled many members of the Mafair congregation to get involved in many different ways, Pastor Kim Goddard said, and at the school they’ve come to be known as Lincoln’s “Mafair Angels” for the help they provide.
The Sons and Daughters of Douglass donated the winter wear items last month for distribution to students who needed them at Lincoln Elementary, using part of a $2,500 City of Kingsport grant. The school distributed the items this month to about 60 students; another distribution will occur around the first of December.
