Grant Eugene “Gene” Spencer

KINGSPORT - Grant Eugene “Gene” Spencer, 75, of Kingsport, went home to be with the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on June 25th at his home following a short-term illness.

Gene was born in Vonore, TN and raised in Chattanooga, TN where he graduated from Central High School. He attended the University of Tennessee, earning his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Electrical Engineering. He retired from Eastman after 28 years of service in IT. Previously, he worked at General Dynamics in Fort Worth, TX and the naval shipyard in Newport News, VA. He attended Higher Ground Baptist Church. He enjoyed annual golf trips, delivering Meals on Wheels in the community, reading and working puzzles.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Jo Spencer; father, Franklin Grant Spencer; grandfather, L.W. Moser; grandmother, Gypsy Moser; uncle, Maurice M. Moser; three aunts, Marie Kopczynski; Doris Carter and Hilda Parks.

Gene is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Billie “BJ” Gilreath Spencer; his daughter Kelli Spencer; grandchildren, Eli and Talia Spencer Heyman, all of Atlanta, GA; his aunt, Frances Moates, of Chattanooga, TN; his step-son, Logan Ferguson (Kaylan) and step-grandson, Landon Ferguson, of Kingsport; father-in-law, Bill Gilreath of Kingsport; sister-in-law, Sallie Guy of Kingsport; several cousins and his two special cats, Smokey and Scooter, with whom he loved to spend time with.

Gene’s body will be donated to Restore Life USA for Research and Science with the remains for cremation per his wishes. A celebration of life will be planned at a later date.

The family wishes to express a sincere appreciation for the care provided to Gene by the doctors and nurses at Holston Valley Hospital, SELECT Specialty at Bristol Regional Hospital and Amedisys Hospice.
