Six local players named to TSWA All-State volleyball teams

Six student athletes from Northeast Tennessee earned a spot on this year's Tennessee Sports Writers Association All-State volleyball teams. Isa Dau (libero) and Lucy O'Daniel (setter) represented Science Hill on the Class AAA squad, with Dobyns-Bennett's Mela Brice (setter) also making the list. In Class AA, Sullivan East's Makayla Moore (outside hitter), Volunteer's Raylie Gray (setter) and Chuckey-Doak's Jacey Taylor (outside hitter) earned All-State accolades. O'Daniel recorded 1,175 assists in 2025, averaging 9.2 per set and ranking third in the state on MaxPreps. Additionally, she served 55 aces with a 91.8 serve percentage, blocked 19 attacks, slammed 137 kills and recorded 322 digs (2.5 per set). With two seasons remaining, O'Daniel already has 1,263 assists to her name. Dau's 620 digs ranked No. 1 in the state, according to MaxPreps. And she finished the year with a 95% serve receive rate, 70 aces and 99 assists. Brice dished out 1,016 assists and served 47 aces her senior year at D-B, recording 150 digs with 53 kills, 10 blocks and 12 block kills. Moore, a freshman, led Sullivan East with her 431 kills while serving 34 aces with 242 digs, 31 blocks and 11 assists. Gray dished out 970 assisted her junior year to go with 32 service aces, 49 kills, 97 digs and three blocks. The full list can be found at the bottom of this story. Unaka 46, Twin Springs 40 NICKELSVILLE — Michelle Shields fired in 16 points, with a trio of 3-pointers, to help Unaka earn a tough road victory. Just as critical in the win, Kalli Shepard scored all nine of her points in the fourth quarter, on three 3s of her own. Arianna Sutherland matched her with nine points for Unaka, which led 31-27 after three quarters. Emma Ross made four 3s and scored 14 points for the Lady Titans, 12 in the second half. Kenzie Gillenwater added 12 with three triples, and Isabella Dingus scored eight. Unicoi County 54, University High 15 JOHNSON CITY — Brooklynn Sparks scored 17 to lead a balanced effort for Unicoi County, which allowed just one field goal in the first half and led 24-4 at the break. Sparks and Laney Rogers, who scored 10 points, both made two 3-pointers. Carly Baxter added eight points. Emma Linkous scored eight to lead UH. Cloudland 63, Chuckey-Doak 26 ROAN MOUNTAIN — Ten players scored for the Lady Highlanders, who led 22-9 after one quarter and 39-12 at halftime. Makinna Shell led the way with 13 points on 6-of-13 shooting. Eowyn McCoury shot 4-of-6 with two 3-pointers to finish with 10. Regan Blair and Emily Forbes (3-for-3) both scored eight. Carlene Bishop and Jayden Myers both had eight for Chuckey-Doak. Morristown East 62, Volunteer 42 MORRISTOWN — Molli Stuffle, one of three players to hit double figures for MoEast, hit five 3-pointers and scored 19 points. Kennady Phillips added 13 and Hannah Hall had 10. Emma Miller led the Lady Falcons with 15 points, 11 in the second half. BOYS Volunteer 65, Morristown East 55 MORRISTOWN — The Hurricanes simply had no answer for Jeremiah Jones. He made 15 field goals and 4-of-6 free throws to end with 34 points for the Falcons. In fact, Jones made at least three field goals in all four quarters, scoring 10 in the final frame. Griffin Head made all eight of his free throws to finish with 10 points. Amarion Graves got all nine of his points in the second half. Chance Stokely (16), Brayden Smith (13) and Jaxson Archer (12) all hit double figures for MoEast. Unaka 74, Twin Springs 48 NICKELSVILLE — Aiden Walsh and Cooper Smith both scored 15 points, combining for 19 in the first half as the Rangers took a 25-8 lead after the opening quarter. Zack Wallin added 14 points and John Hardin 11. Wallin, Smith and Austin Lambert both made two 3s. Clay Ross, who buried five 3s, led the Titans with a game-high 18 points. Unicoi County 51, University High 41 JOHNSON CITY — Jackson Simmons helped Unicoi County distance itself in the second quarter, where he made five field goals and scored 12 points. He ended the game with 25 including two 3-pointers. A.J. Thomas hit from deep four times in his 15-point effort, as the Blue Devils led 34-22 at the half and 41-28 after three. Jansen West led the Buccaneers with nine points. Ty Templin (two 3s) and Knox Poston both had eight. Chuckey-Doak 69, Cloudland 34 ROAN MOUNTAIN — Ryland Grindstaff fired in 20 points, and Dom Atchison had 14 for the Black Knights.
