CHURCH HILL — A new organization opening in Church Hill after the first of the year hopes to assist eligible parents with what can be their biggest daily expense.

Organizers held a ribbon cutting on Dec. 16 for the new Heaven's Bell Diaper Pantry, located in the Church Hill shopping center at 401 Richmond St., suite 104, Church Hill.

Heaven's Bell is a nonprofit diaper pantry serving residents of Hawkins County in association with the Of One Accord ministry.

Beginning in 2019, Heaven's Bell will be open Monday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., providing free diapers to parents/legal guardians who demonstrate financial need in accordance with USDA guidelines.

The grand opening is Monday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

What is Heaven's Bell?

Heaven's Bell diaper pantry was created by Tammy Johnson in memory of Pastor Derek Bell (1967-2016) with the intention of continuing  his legacy of love and compassion.

Johnson said Bell loved God and had a genuine passion for people of all walks of life, but especially the vulnerable and the weak.

Why a diaper ministry?

Diapers are very expensive and are not covered by WIC or SNAP (food stamps).

Many low-income families are unable to purchase adequate numbers of diapers for their infants/toddlers. Infants can go through 12 diapers a day; toddlers 8-10

Child care businesses require parents to provide a daily supply of diapers.

When diapers are not changed, infants/toddlers are subject to urinary tract infections, rashes and infections.

Cleaner, drier babies are happier babies. Frequently crying babies suffer a higher incidence of child abuse.

What is Heaven's Bell's mission?

The ministry's goal is to provide for and protect the most vulnerable members of our society: infants and toddlers. Persons seeking diapers must be the parent or legal guardian of a child from birth to 3 years of age.

On the first visit, the parent/guardian will be interviewed to determine eligibility. The following documentation is required: Tennessee driver’s license or ID showing a Hawkins County address, Social Security cards for all family members, proof of income for all family members, a recent copy of your SNAP letter (if any), and proof of legal guardianship (if applicable).

Recipients will be re-validated yearly

If eligible, and based on diapers in stock, Heaven's Bell will provide a quantity of diapers as close as possible to the correct size for each infant and toddler.
