Lady Raiders, Pioneers move on in Cumberland tourney

NORTON — Sarah Mullins, Maggie Williams and Bailey Sturgill helped make sure the J.I. Burton volleyball team’s season didn’t end Monday.

The trio’s play bolstered the Lady Raiders to a sweep of Castlewood, 27-25, 25-15, 25-15, in the opening round of the Cumberland District tournament.

Mullins racked up 23 kills and five digs, Williams knocked down 18 kills and came up with 12 digs and Sturgill compiled 39 assists and six digs.

Next up for the Lady Raiders is a meeting with district champion and host Rye Cove on Tuesday in the second tournament semifinal match in Clinchport.


EWING — The Lady Pioneers advanced to the Cumberland semifinals with a 25-17, 25-11, 25-18 win over the visiting Lady Titans.

Tanna Whitt had 14 kills and two blocks, Taylor Dibrell contributed 13 kills and Madison Mayes had eight kills for Thomas Walker, which will play second-seeded Eastside on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the district semifinals at Rye Cove.

Sara Elliott had four kills and three blocks and Natalie Adams tallied 12 assists for Twin Springs.


BRISTOL, Va. — Michaela Monk recorded 11 kills and four digs, Keelie Pippen piled up 24 assists and Alyssa Maiden tacked on seven digs and five aces to send the Lady Trojans into the Mountain 7 District semifinals. Battle won 25-8, 25-16, 25-15 to set up a 6 p.m. meeting with Abingdon on Tuesday at Union.

Hannah Reasor totaled 14 digs for the Lady Generals, who got 10 assists from Cameron Baker, nine digs and six kills from Haley Anderson, and five digs and four kills from Alyssa Werner.

Gate City tops Central in four to reach Mountain 7 semifinals


ABINGDON — The Lady Falcons moved into the Mountain 7 tournament semifinals with a 25-13, 25-11, 25-22 victory over the Lady Wolfpack.

Megan Counts tallied 15 digs, Abby Boyd had 14 assists and Katie Harless knocked down eight kills to lead Abingdon.
