BIG STONE GAP — Union moved a step closer to clinching a share of the Mountain 7 District regular-season volleyball championship Tuesday.

The Lady Bears (17-4, 10-1) controlled the momentum for most of the match in a 3-0 sweep of Wise Central.

Union, which has already clinched the district’s No. 1 seed for the Region 2D tournament, can clinch at least a share of the Mountain 7 title with a win over John Battle on Thursday.

Class 3 Abingdon would also gain a share of the district title by beating Wise Central on Thursday.

If both Union and Abingdon win their next match, they will meet in a playoff Saturday to determine the No. 1 seed and host school for next week’s Mountain 7 tournament.

Union’s 25-18, 25-15, 25-21 win Tuesday came despite playing without injured starter Abbi Dickenson and trying out some new offensive and defensive schemes.

“We were trying some things tonight and I’m proud of the girls for applying what we’ve been working on,” said Lady Bears coach Kim Moore. “It gives us more options so we can be more flexible and have more options.”

Regardless of the attack or defensive scheme, Union’s Emili Brooks was on target with 14 kills, five blocks and nine digs. Meghan Blagg added 10 kills for the Lady Bears, who also got 33 assists from Zoe Brooks, 15 digs from Audrey Gilliam and 10 digs from Krista Meredith.

Megan VanDyke had 10 kills, three blocks and three aces and Savana Edwards had seven kills for Central. Caitlynn Maggard chipped in 17 assists, Hannah McAmis had 19 digs and Rylee Duncan added nine digs.

“Union is a very good competitive team and we just couldn’t find consistency,” said Lady Warriors coach Jessica Sturgill. “We played good in moments and were able to cut the score. But once we made a mistake, they really used that as momentum and jumped ahead.”
