KINGSPORT — A Grammy-nominated contemporary Christian artist is coming to the Model City next weekend.

Carman will take the stage for a free concert at Ross N. Robinson Middle School on Sept. 29. Presented by Tri-City Worship Church, a new church in Kingsport, the concert is one of many ways the church hopes to reach out to the community.

“What I want is for people to know that we’re here and it’s an incredible worship experience,” said lead pastor Bryan Warren. “Having somebody like Carman come in … it’s just an awareness that, ‘Wow, they’re doing something that’s different.’ ”

About Carman

According to his bio, “Carman Domenic Licciardello is an enigma in Christian music, often described as part evangelist, part Vegas showman.” His concerts have been described as “more like a rock and roll Billy Graham crusade than a Christian music event.”

Well known in the ’80s and ’90s, Carman has been nominated for four Grammy awards and has won six Dove awards. He was inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2018 and continues to perform in churches and other venues.

“In the ’80s and ’90s, he was world famous,” said associate pastor Gene Young. “It’s amazing the crowds that he’s drawn.”

About the concert

The concert will begin at 6 p.m. at the school, located at 1517 Jessee St. The venue can seat just over 900 people, Young said, and tickets aren’t needed for general admission.

VIP tickets are available for $20 for those who would like to meet Carman and get a photo with him. Those tickets can be purchased online at tri-cityworship.com or by phone at (833) 245-3329.

“There’s a lot of interest,” Young said. “For a free concert, it should really fill out.”
