KINGSPORT — Time is running out to preregister for Tuesday’s Alzheimer’s caregiver conference.

Sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Regional Resource Center and Kingsport Kiwanis Club, the event aims to educate and encourage those who are caring for someone with Alzheimer’s disease.

Facts and figures: Bill Sade, member of Kingsport Kiwanis, said the need for a yearly caregiver conference such as this continues to grow. According to a press release, more than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease, including 120,000 in Tennessee.

As the number of Americans diagnosed with this disease increases, the number of caregivers increases along with it. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, 16.1 million Americans provide unpaid care for people with Alzheimer’s or other dementias.

When and where: The conference will be held Tuesday, Sept. 25, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with registration beginning at 8 a.m.

As in years past, this year’s event will be held in the St. Dominic Catholic Church Parish Life Center, located at 2517 N. John B. Dennis Highway in Kingsport. Breakfast, lunch and snacks will be provided.

The speaker: Jolene Brackey, a nationally known speaker and author of “Creating Moments of Joy,” will lead the conference. According to a press release, Brackey “has a vision that goes beyond the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease and includes creating smiles and moments of joy.”

“People living with memory loss have a life made up of moments,” the release states. “Caregivers cannot create a perfectly wonderful day for their loved ones, but they can create perfectly wonderful moments.”

Registration: Online registration is open now at www.kingsportkiwanis.org. The cost is $50 for family caregivers, $95 for professional caregivers and $100 for vendor tables with one attendee.

Professional caregivers can receive 6.5 Continuing Education Unit (CEU) credits for attending.
