Union's Cusano collects more gold at state swim meet

RICHMOND – One of the most successful athletes in Southwest Virginia added a couple of more medals to her collection Thursday.

Union senior Ashley Cusano broke her own VHSL Class 2 state record with a winning time of 53.92 to win the 100 Butterfly at the Class 2 state swimming championships at the Swim RVA Aquatics Center.

Cusano, who has signed with N.C. State to continue her swimming career next year, also won the 100 Backstroke (55.58), giving her seven state championships in her high school career.

Other area swimmers had strong showings.

Gate City junior Megan Cooper finished fifth in the 200 Freestyle.

Rye Cove senior R.J. Goins placed sixth in the 200 IM, while battling illness in the state championships.

Virginia High finished second in team competition behind wins from the 200 Medley relay, the 200 Freestyle relay and Cooper Gobble’s victory in the 100 Freestyle.

Virginia High’s girls team finished third in the team standings.

Radford won the boys team championship, while the girls team title went Glenvar.
