Falcons soar to Mountain 7 wrestling championship

ABINGDON — Abingdon won eight divisions Saturday to claim the Mountain 7 District wrestling championship on its home turf.

Only four of the district’s five teams participated in the tournament. John Battle was a no-show because several team members were stricken with the flu, but district officials said the Trojans still will be allowed to compete in the Region 2D championships set for Feb. 15 at Virginia High.

All Mountain 7 wrestlers are eligible for the regional tournaments.

Abingdon moved on to next weekend’s Region 3D in Christiansburg. Union, Wise Central, Lee High and John Battle advanced to the Region 2D event.

The Mountain 7 tournament offered plenty of competition regardless of the number of teams.

Abingdon collected wins from Dalton Minnick (106-pound class), Dylan Nichols (113), Matney Kendrick (120), Yennesew Smith (132), Jack Newton (145), Jadon Booth (152) and Joby Milstead (170) on the way to racking up a team title-clinching 182 points.

Central, bolstered by wins from junior Austin Eldridge (182) and freshman Brady Sturgill (285), finished second with 106 points.

Lee High (77 points) and Union (76) rounded out the team scores.

Lee’s Isaiah Dotson was a winner in the 138 division and Luke Estes took the gold in the 195 class for the Generals.

Defending VHSL Class 2 champion Mason Polier was the lone championship-round winner for Union.

Polier added a second straight Mountain 7 title to his two Region 2D gold medals and last year’s state championship in the 195 class.

He is wrestling in the 220 class this season, but Polier has the same goals: region and state titles.

“We’re going to really pick up this week in practice and find what we need to work on, find the moves we like and just try to master those because it’s do or die now. The top three move on and that’s how it is,” Polier said.

Grundy and Rural Retreat dominated the Region 1D wrestling championships held Saturday at Grundy.

The Golden Wave took the overall team championship with 288 points and the Indians totaled 253 points, both far outdistancing the rest of the field.

Chilhowie finished third with 116 points, followed by Castlewood (98), Honaker (85), Eastside (67), Northwood (64.5), Holston (59), Patrick Henry (39) and J.I. Burton (3).

Grundy placed a wrestler in the finals in all but one of the 14 classes.

The Golden Wave got individual championships from Ethan Blankenship (106), Kaleb Horn (113), Chris Stiltner (138), Jacob Stiltner (145), Peyton McComas (182), Tanner Bishop (220) and Logan Looney (285).

Rural Retreat crowned six champions: Eli Blevins (120), Justin Martin (126), Blaine Sage (152), Dorian Delp (160), Wyatt Sage (170) and Eli Fortuner (195).

Castlewood’s Cole Jessee was the only wrestler not from Grundy or Rural Retreat to claim a championship. Jessee pinned Grundy’s Christian McGeorge in 3:22 to win the 132-pound title.
