SW Va. Notes: Farmers and Miners prep tourney just around the corner

The fall season for local high schools begins next month with volleyball matches starting Aug. 26 and football kicking off on Aug. 29. But two weeks prior to that, prep athletes will compete in the Farmers and Miners Bank Invitational golf tournament at Cedar Hills Country Club near Jonesville.

The annul F&M tournament, which will mark its 28th edition next month, is one of the oldest high school golf events in the region and will feature the defending VHSL Class 2 state champions.

Coach Jarred Chandler’s Union squad will defend its tournament title, but the Bears will have a much different look than last season.

Union was seven seniors deep last year on the way to the state crown. This year, Chandler has a whole new crop of players, who will see their first varsity prep tournament action in the F&M.

Several other teams from the Mountain 7 — Gate City, Lee, Wise Central and possibly John Battle and Abingdon — are scheduled to participate along with Castlewood, Cumberland Gap and newcomer Chilhowie, according to Lee coach and tournament director Barry Audia.

Audia said other possible participants could come from Rye Cove, Eastside, Ridgeview and Tennessee High, among others.

As many as 16 teams could compete, and Audia said the tournament is open to any high school squad. Teams that are interested in participating can contact him at (276) 870-7919.

Virginia-Wise men’s basketball has named three additions to its preseason roster for the 2019-20 season.

The freshman recruits for the Cavaliers include:

* Drew Green, a 6-3 point guard from Wesleyan Christian Academy in High Point, N.C.

* Izeah Parker, a two-sport star at Hopewell (Va.) High School, where he played both basketball and tennis. The 6-8 forward owns Hopewell’s record for most blocked shots in a season with 40.

* Savion Pierce-Blunt, who played for TLPS Christian Academy in Richmond for four years and spent last season playing for the Huntington (W. Va.) Prep regional team. The 6-5 guard amassed more than 900 points in his four-year career at TLPS Christian.

The Virginia-Wise women’s basketball team has added another player to its preseason squad.

Sullivan Central grad Peyton Sams has committed to continue her career with the Cavaliers. Central coach Kristi Moody announced Sams’ signing earlier this week.

Several local athletes announced their intention to continue their playing days at Southwest Virginia Community College in Claypool Hill recently.

The upcoming school year marks the first season for SVCC’s full-fledged intercollegiate athletic program.

Among the recent signees for the Flying Eagles are:

* Dewayne Garrett II, who carried a .347 batting average with nine stolen bases and a .967 fielding percentage while playing outfield for the Lee High Generals baseball squad.

* Grace Rhoton, who was a second team All-Region 1D and libero of the year and first team All-Cumberland District volleyball pick for the Rye Cove Lady Eagles this past season.
