Lady Bobcats knock off Warriors in Class 2 quarters

The Radford girls tennis team ended Wise Central’s state tournament run Tuesday with a 5-1 victory in the VHSL Class 2 quarterfinals at Radford.

The Lady Bobcats, last year’s state runners-up, advanced to face Gate City on Monday in the Class 2 semifinals at Radford. The meeting is a rematch of last season’s state semis, won by Radford.

The Lady Warriors’ win in Tuesday’s quarterfinals came at No. 4 singles where Sydney Linkous swept Lily Weschke 6-2, 6-3.


Megan Dockery of J.I. Burton defeated Emily Hollandsworth of Thomas Walker 6-3, 7-5 to capture the Region 1D singles championship.

In the doubles final, Hollandsworth teamed with Ana Mancini to beat Emily Dockery and Morgan Fawbush of Burton 6-0, 7-5.

Friday’s VHSL Class 1 team quarterfinals will see J.I. Burton host George Wythe at 1:30 p.m. at Virginia-Wise. Thomas Walker must travel to Auburn for the state quarters.

Auburn beat George Wythe 5-1 on Tuesday for the Region 1C title.
