Baseball, softball, soccer, tennis and track and field postseason action is all on the slate for the rest of May and the first couple of weeks of June.
STILL NOT SETTLED
Despite the quickly approaching postseason, the regular season in several sports still has to be settled.
Abingdon has won the Mountain 7 District baseball regular season and John Battle will finish second.
From that point, sorting out the district standings is complicated.
Gate City, Wise Central and Union could likely, barring any late-season upsets, end up tied for third place with identical 6-6 district records.
Gate City (11-9, 6-6) has completed play in the regular season. Union (11-6, 5-5) has two district games left — at home against John Battle Thursday and at Lee High on Monday — and Wise Central (9-9, 6-5) is scheduled to close out its regular season on Friday at Abingdon.
If two or three of the teams end in a tie for third, the seeding will be determined by a coin toss or a series of coin tosses.
Softball seeding in the Mountain 7 District, much like baseball, still remains uncertain for several teams.
John Battle (15-3, 10-1) and Union (11-4, 9-1) will likely decide the district regular-season champion on Friday at John Battle.
Behind the top two seeds, Ridgeview is the likely candidate for the third seed, while Gate City will end up tied for fourth with the winner of Thursday’s game between Wise Central and Abingdon.
In the Cumberland District, seeding for the baseball and softball tournaments are settled.
As has been the case for nearly a decade, the top seeds in both sports come from the same school.
Eastside has won the regular-season district championship in both baseball and softball for the past eight years, when the school opened.
Twin Springs, like Eastside, drew first-round byes in both baseball and softball this season after finishing second in both sports.
The Cumberland baseball tournament’s first round of play is scheduled to start Friday with J.I. Burton hosting Rye Cove and Thomas Walker playing at Castlewood.
The Cumberland softball tournament starts Tuesday with first-round games featuring Burton hosting Thomas Walker and Rye Cove at Castlewood.
ONE MORE TITLE UP FOR GRABS
John Battle has clinched the Mountain 7 girls’ soccer regular-season championship but the boys’ title is still up for grabs.
Abingdon and Gate City could tie for first place in the Mountain 7 if Abingdon defeats Wise Central on Thursday.
An Abingdon win would set up a playoff between Abingdon and Gate City on Monday at Sugar Hollow Park in Bristol to determine the district tournament’s top seed and host.
The tournament is scheduled to begin on Monday.
