He was born March 22, 1936 in Dongola, Illinois, moved to Stanley, NC as an infant, he resided in Kingsport the majority of his life. A member of Glen Alpine United Methodist Church, Jim taught Sunday School for over 40 years and served on various committees. Jim attended Catawba College and graduated from ETSU. He played basketball for over 20 years, from Jr. High through adulthood. Jim was a veteran of the U.S. Army and retired from Tennessee Eastman, after 30 years, as a project manager in the Engineering and Construction Division.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Mary Quinn Cline; four brothers, and two sisters.
Jim is survived by the love of his life, Susie, his wife of 59 years; two daughters, Suzanne LaRue (Jon) and Jill Cline (Kim); son, Jim Cline II (Elizabeth); five grandchildren, Hunter Fish, Mary Elizabeth Phelps (Ben), Katie Cline Underwood (Ben), Morgan Cline, and Meredith Quinn Cline; three great-grandchildren, Peyton and James (Jack) Phelps, and Claire Underwood; and a special niece and nephew, Carolyn Greene and Cliff Wilson.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 27, 2018, at Glen Alpine United Methodist Church. The funeral service will follow at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Ritchie Hayes officiating.
Burial will follow at East Tennessee Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.
Pallbearers are Mark Bragg, Rock Bragg, Brandon Bragg, Ben Underwood, Drew Deakins, and Calvin Clifton.
Honorary pallbearers are Steadman Sunday School Class, T. Vernon McCray, Hank Woods, Mike Brown and Donald Whipple.
