Kingsport Police interviews witnesses to 'possible homicide'

Kingsport police are releasing little information concerning a “possible homicide” Monday morning.

About 12:30 a.m., police received a call of gunshots fired in the area of Memorial Boulevard and East Center Street. In the parking lot of Spa World, 2450 Memorial Blvd., they found the body of William R. Lynch III, 39.

A Monday morning press release from the Kingsport Police Department said there were no obvious signs of gunshot wounds to the victim. Rather, he suffered trauma to the head, and police believe he may have been run over by a vehicle.

On Wednesday, KPD Detective David Cole confirmed that shell casings were found at the scene. However, he declined to say if a firearm was located on Lynch or in the surrounding area.

Cole added that witnesses are being interviewed. When asked whether these witnesses were passers-by or potentially involved in an altercation that led to Lynch’s death, Cole said, “that’s what we’re trying to determine.”

Police have also checked surveillance equipment from nearby businesses. No pertinent video related to the incident has been discovered.

Cole said Lynch was originally from Maryland but had been living in Kingsport for “quite some time.”

Investigators have uncovered past criminal charges against Lynch, but a complete and thorough check is still being conducted.

An investigation into Monday’s incident is ongoing.
