Auditions for membership in the East Tennessee Children’s Choir (ETCC) will be held Monday, May 20, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Munsey Church, located at 201 S. Roan Street, in Johnson City. Auditions for membership in the Emory Virginia Children’s Choir (EVCC) will be held Thursday, May 23, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the Byars Building on the Campus of Emory and Henry College. Children who are in grades 4 and up may audition for either choir. Children are auditioned in small groups and no preparation is necessary. Auditions take about 25 minutes and are conducted on a first-come, first-served basis.
Children in grades 1 through 3 may register for the Choristers at the same times on the same dates at each location. There is no formal audition for Choristers, but registration is a time to meet the director and sing informally. The Choristers perform in several concerts and events per year with the MECCA choirs, including with the symphony at Christmas! Amy Potterton is the director of the Johnson City group, and Emily McCraw is the director of the Emory group.
MECCA singers have performed at American Choral Directors Association regional and state conferences (2016, 2014), Carnegie Hall (2017, 2016, 2010, 2006), in Greece (Festival of the Aegean, 2014), in Hungary (International Chamber Choir Competition, 2007), and have collaborated with Barter Theatre, the American Boychoir, the Rybinsk (Russia) Girls Chorus, and many other renowned ensembles. MECCA singers are regularly selected to participate in national, regional, state, and district honor choirs, and Governor’s Schools for both Tennessee and Virginia, and many have been selected as national soloists. MECCA choirs receive yearly invitations to sing for the Biltmore Estate Christmas Candlelight Evenings.
