Fallen tree causes power outage, road closure in Kingsport

Staff Report • May 21, 2020 at 10:18 PM

KINGSPORT — Fall Creek Road is closed and roughly 240 customers remain without power after a large tree fell and caused extensive damage to electrical equipment Thursday evening.

According to a press release from Appalachian Power, “shortly before 6 p.m., a large tree uprooted and fell across a section of wire in the 1200 block of Fall Creek Road in Kingsport. When the tree fell, it broke two poles and damaged eight others. Wire, multiple cross arms and other related equipment were also damaged.”

Fall Creek Road is closed. The damage is located between Emory Church Road and Warrior Falls Drive.

Appalachian Power crews are on the scene and will work through the night to repair the damage.

“About 20 employees are at the location. Some are cutting the tree and others are focused on the extensive electrical repairs,” spokesperson Teresa Hamilton Hall said in the release. “We hope to have the repairs complete and power back on sometime between 7 and 9 a.m. (Friday).”

When the tree fell, it took out power to about 600 customers. Appalachian Power was able to switch the majority of customers to an alternate circuit for power. However, about 240 customers will remain without service until repairs are complete.
