Truck driver involved in Fordtown Road collision dies

From staff reports • Nov 10, 2019 at 5:50 PM

KINGSPORT — Police say a truck driver involved in a collision on Fordtown Road last Monday has died.

The Kingsport Police Department said it was notified by area medical professionals Saturday that Anthony Alan Wofford, 63, Laurel, Mississippi, had died.

On Nov. 4 at around 11 a.m., patrol officers responded to a collision involving two tractor trailers on Fordtown Road at the intersection with Tri-Cities Crossing. The KPD Traffic Unit was called to the scene to investigate.

Police said a white 2019 Freightliner Cascadia tractor-trailer, driven and solely occupied by Carl Adolph Reuter, 73, Milton, Florida, was westbound on Fordtown Road and preparing to proceed straight through the intersection with Tri-Cities Crossing and enter an access ramp to northbound Interstate 81.

Meanwhile a white 2014 WSTR tractor-trailer, driven and solely occupied by Wofford, was northbound on Fordtown Road and preparing to proceed straight through the same intersection onto Tri-Cities Crossing.

The Freightliner had a stop sign, and the WSTR had no traffic controls. Police say Reuter failed to yield the right of way and drove the Freightliner into the intersection directly in the path of the WSTR. With the intersection completely blocked, the WSTR crashed into the side of the Freightliner’s trailer, causing the Freightliner  to roll onto its side.

Reuter was not injured.

The crash remains under active investigation by the KPD Traffic Unit with charges pending.
