11-W crash kills elderly Hawkins County woman

SURGOINSVILLE — A tractor-trailer allegedly pulled into the path of an SUV Wednesday morning on Highway 11-W, spurring a collision that killed a woman.

According to a preliminary report from the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the incident occurred about 10:15 at the intersection with AFG Road. The driver of a Freightliner, which was hauling glass, was attempting to turn from the highway onto AFG.

While doing so, he reportedly pulled into the path of an eastbound Toyota Highlander. The SUV struck the rear axle of the tractor-trailer and came to rest in the westbound lanes.

The Toyota’s passenger, Diana M. Blevins, 73, of Surgoinsville, was killed. The driver, Charles M. Blevins, 75, sustained unspecified injuries.

The operator of the tractor-trailer, Mario F. Irigollen, 56, of Glenn Heights, Texas, was also injured. Police have cited him for failure to yield the right of way. An investigation is continuing.
