KINGSPORT — More than six weeks after a 4-year-old child was found dead under reportedly suspicious circumstances, an investigation into the incident is continuing.

On the Sunday morning of Aug. 5, Kingsport Police Department patrol officers were called to a home in Colonial Heights, finding a deceased child. KPD detectives took over the case, and the body was sent to the ETSU Quillen College of Medicine for an autopsy.

Citing the sensitive nature of the case and juvenile status of the deceased, police have released no additional information, including why they labeled the death as "suspicious."

On Tuesday, Sullivan County District Attorney General Barry Staubus confirmed to the Times News that an investigation is continuing. He said that at this time, he was unable to comment on the nature of the child's death or if it may be presented to the grand jury for consideration of any charges.

An estimate for when the probe could conclude was not provided.
