Today, more than 225,000 men, women and children have ridden the only traditional carousel found in the Tri-Cities. The city is inviting you and your family to come downtown Saturday to celebrate the carousel’s third birthday.
Beginning at 10 a.m. and continuing all day, the carousel is offering free rides for all, along with rock and face painting and games for the kids, live music and more.
At the nearby Farmers Market, the free cooking demo series, Saturdays with the Chef, will begin that day as well at 9 a.m. with free samples and recipes.
Live music begins at 10:30 a.m. presented by Pickin’ Porch. Icy treats will be available from Kona Ice.
For folks who preordered the limited edition carousel coloring book, “Ups and Downs of the Merry-Go-Round,” author BB Joyner and illustrator Joe Pilkenton will be on hand to sign copies of the book. All books will be available for pickup at the carousel during the birthday party.
Participants in Dawn Whitelaw’s Outdoor Painting Workshop will be set up at the carousel to paint the vibrant scene of the carousel birthday party. Watch them practice “plein air” painting while you shop for local produce, catch a free ride on the carousel and play a game of giant checkers.

ABOUT THE CAROUSEL
The Kingsport Carousel is a volunteer-led project completed in 2015. More than 300 volunteers worked for five years to hand carve and paint platform and sweep animals for the working 1956 vintage Herschell carousel. The carousel is located adjacent to the Farmers Market building and is open to the public yearround. All rides are $1.
