KINGSPORT – Friday is “Take your Dog to Work Day.” Could there be a better holiday for dog owners?

Businesses all around the world are expected to participate in this dog-loving event, now in its 20th year. It was first established in 1999 by Pet Sitters International to encourage businesses to experience the employee benefits of having dogs in the workplace and to promote adoptions from local shelters, rescue groups and humane societies.

At the local level, the Kingsport Chamber of Commerce plans to participate in the event, allowing its employees to bring their canine pals to work. PETWorks will bring a couple of dogs by for employees to borrow (or maybe even adopt).

They’re also having a fundraiser lunch on the terrace (hot dogs, of course), along with homemade treats for the dogs.

“It’s going to be great,” said Dana McMurray, the manager of Community Impact at Healthy Kingsport. “Everybody is so excited because your pets are a part of your family and like every parent, you like showing off your kids.”

McMurray said she plans to bring 18-month-old dog Tucker – a larger than normal shih tzu – to work on Friday. Others will as well, she said.

“He’s a trail dog and we go hiking all the time. Being out on the trail and around people, he’s just going to love it here,” McMurray said.
