WISE — A Norton man who stabbed a woman in August 2018 will spend 12 years in prison.

Jonathan Eric Smith, 39, was sentenced Wednesday after pleading guilty Sept. 3 to charges of malicious wounding, assault and battery of a family or household member and assault and battery of emergency medical personnel.

Wise County and Norton Commonwealth’s Attorney Chuck Slemp III said Thursday that Smith on Aug. 28, 2018 attacked and stabbed a woman multiple times.

Norton police officers responded to the scene, where they found a woman covered in blood and yelling for help. Smith was standing inside the residence and holding a serrated knife, Slemp said, and refused to drop the weapon before fighting with police and emergency medical personnel. Smith was pepper-sprayed and arrested.

The victim survived stab wounds in the chest, back, stomach and shoulder area. Smith later told officers he had overdosed on wasp killer and stimulants before the attack, Slemp said.

Slemp said Smith faced a maximum possible sentence of 50 years on the charges before being sentenced to 27 years with 15 suspended.
