BLOUNTVILLE — A Sullivan County Sheriff's Office deputy was charged Wednesday with two counts of domestic assault, according to a report issued by the sheriff's office

Joseph Tomes, 29, of Bristol, resigned after his arrest, according to the report.

At an arraignment Thursday morning, Tomes' bond was set at $2,000 and a Nov. 20 court date was set.

Tomes had been employed with the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office as a Corrections Deputy since Dec. 10, 2018.

The charges are the result of two different incidents, according to the report: Wednesday evening the sheriff’s office received allegations Tomes was involved in a domestic violence assault; Tomes was at work when the assault was reported; it allegedly occurred earlier in the day; an investigation into the assault began and according to the report, the investigator learned another assault had occurred on Oct. 31

The report from the sheriff's office concluded "As with any position of public trust, employees in law enforcement are held to a higher standard. The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office takes matters such as this seriously and responds appropriately when such accusations are made."
