Staff report • Nov 11, 2019 at 10:53 AM

KINGSPORT — A city man has succumbed to injuries he sustained during a weekend wreck on Interstate 26.

According to Kingsport police, Jeremiah S. Fields, 37, passed away on Monday morning. At about 7:45 Saturday night he was ejected from his car on eastbound I-26.

Police report that at mile-marker 1.4, a Chrysler 200 was being lawfully driven in the center lane by Cecilia M. Haynes, 19, of Greeneville. Fields allegedly approached from behind in a 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier and traveling at a significantly higher rate of speed.

Fields reportedly rear-ended the Chrysler as he swerved left in an attempt to avoid a collision or make a pass. After hitting Haynes' vehicle, Fields' Cavalier veered out of control into the cable barrier and overturned, coming to rest upside down in the adjacent median.

Police say Fields was not wearing a seat belt. He had been hospitalized receiving care prior to his death on Monday.

Haynes was not injured in the collision.
