According to a press release from the Scott County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred shortly before noon on Tuesday. The victim told police that as she exited a friend’s home at 321 Spring Valley Circle, a man wearing a mask and armed with a gun grabbed a purse that was over her shoulder.
Police report that during the ensuing struggle, the man used the firearm to strike the woman in the side of the face and neck. She fell to the ground and the suspect ran away with the purse. The bag reportedly contained a large amount of cash and prescription medication.
As the SCSO and Virginia State Police canvassed the area, a witness reported seeing a man with a purse running to a nearby home. Police say that when they visited that residence, 429 Spring Valley Circle, they found Torri L. Sledge, 36, who matched descriptions of the robbery suspect.
According to a press release, a search of the inside and outside of the home located the purse, money, medication and a handgun with the serial number removed. Sledge was subsequently arrested on numerous charges including robbery, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
