WISE — The man convicted in the March 2018 killing of a man behind Dominion Virginia Power’s power plant near St. Paul received an 18-year prison term Monday.

Wise County Commonwealth’s Attorney Chuck Slemp on Monday said Larry Leon “Snake” Fields, 69, of Dante, was sentenced in Wise County Circuit Court to 23 years in prison with five years suspended and five years’ probation.

In January, Fields  was found guilty of murder, reckless handling of a firearm and use of a firearm in commission of a felony in the March 31, 2018, killing of 48-year old Anthony Ward of Castlewood.

According to court records, security cameras at Dominion’s Virginia City Hybrid Energy Center recorded Fields getting a loaded .22 caliber revolver from his pickup truck, unholstering it and waving it at Ward before shooting him above his right eye and killing him.

According to testimony and evidence, Fields and Ward had been joking with each other at work before the shooting.

“This is a tragic case and a senseless act of violence demonstrating an extreme disregard for human life,” Slemp said “We hope that today’s sentencing will provide closure and justice for the victim’s family.
