Woman killed in I-81 crash at Colonial Heights exit

KINGSPORT — An Elizabethton woman is dead following a two-vehicle wreck on I-81 near Colonial Heights.

According to a Kingsport Police Department news release, a 2015 Hyundai Elantra, driven and solely occupied by Sherry D. Gregg, 53, was northbound when the vehicle swerved off the left side of the roadway and entered the median. The Hyundai struck the cable barrier and re-entered the roadway, coming to rest sideways in the northbound lanes.

Meanwhile, a 2019 Honda Odyssey, driven by Peter Alexander Pham of Glen Allen, Va., and occupied by four additional passengers, was also northbound and traveling behind the Hyundai. Pham was unable to see the disabled vehicle in time to stop and struck it on the driver’s side.

Gregg was killed in the crash. 

Pham and one of his passengers were transported by Sullivan County EMS to a hospital for precautionary evaluation of possible injuries. The other three passengers in the Honda appeared to be uninjured.

The crash remains under active investigation by the KPD Traffic Unit. As such, no additional details are available for release at this time.
