KINGSPORT — Police have arrested a Kingsport woman who reportedly told fast food employees that she had to rob them, then walked behind the counter with a utility knife and started punching buttons on the cash register.

Kristina M. Spears, 30, was quickly apprehended by a responding officer. The incident occurred at about 6:35 Monday morning at the Burger King on Clinchfield Street.

According to employee statements contained in Kingsport Police Department records, Spears approached the counter with a utility knife in her hand, stating that she "has to hold them up." She then walked through a side door to enter the employee area, still armed and placing workers in fear.

After she unsuccessfully tried to obtain cash out of the register, employees attempted to get her to leave. However, Spears was still in the restaurant when police arrived. She complied with orders to drop the utility knife and was arrested without incident.

Spears, address listed as 5028 Memorial Blvd., is charged with aggravated robbery. One witness told police that he heard a man tells Spears to "get money" just before the incident, but that suspect was apparently not on the scene when officers arrived.

The case was passed along to KPD detectives for further investigation, with surveillance video pulled as evidence.
