POUND — A corrections officer was stabbed multiple times by an inmate at Red Onion State Prison in Wise County early Sunday, and another was injured while subduing the attacker, the Virginia Department of Corrections reported.

None of the injuries to the officers were life-threatening.

The DOC said just after 6:30 a.m., the 31-year-old offender used a self-fashioned weapon to deliver several puncture wounds to the upper body of one officer, while the other might have sustained a broken knee.

The DOC did not identify the inmate or the officers. The officers were being treated at Norton Community Hospital and expected to be released Sunday. The inmate is serving a 65-year sentence for five counts of robbery and seven counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony, the DOC said.

The Pound Rescue Squad said two units responded to a call received at 6:49 a.m. The rescue squad said one officer suffered eight superficial stab wounds, one to the middle of the forehead and four located around the left ear area. One superficial stab wound was located on the anterior left shoulder and another on the anterior right shoulder, and a final superficial stab wound was located in the officer’s upper back area.

The Rescue Squad said the other officer sustained an injury to the right knee “as he attempted to go after the assaulting inmate.”
