GATE CITY — The Virginia State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place in Scott County Tuesday evening.

According to Corinne Geller, public relations director with the VSP, the Scott County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call at about 8:18 p.m. at a home in the 1000 block of Daniel Boone Road in Gate City.

Deputies had obtained an emergency custody order (ECO) for a mental evaluation of the 49-year-old man who lives at the home.

“He came to the door and deputies talked to him for a few minutes. ... Then he produced a firearm and fired,” said Major Chris Holder with the SCSO. “Deputies returned fire and he was struck once in the abdomen.”

The VSP reports the man refused to drop the weapon, despite repeated commands by the deputies to do so.

The man was transported to Holston Valley Medical Center and as of Wednesday morning was in stable condition, Holder said. None of the deputies were injured in the shooting.

The investigation is ongoing at this time.

“We hate it the man got shot, but we’re thankful the deputies didn’t get hurt and got to go home to their families,” Holder said.
