Coeburn woman critically injured in ATV crash on Route 72

COEBURN — A Coeburn woman was critically injured Saturday as a result of an ATV accident in Wise County on Route 72.

At 8:25 a.m., Virginia State Police Sr. Trooper D.A. Wells responded to an ATV crash near Caney Ridge Road.

Well said a Polaris all-terrain vehicle was traveling north on Route 72 when its driver lost control and the ATV overturned in the roadway.

The driver, a 39-year-old Coeburn woman, was thrown from the ATV and pinned underneath.

The VSP did not release the victim’s name, but said that as of Saturday evening she was being treated for life-threatening injuries at Holston Valley Medical Center.

An adult male passenger was not injured in the crash.

Neither the driver nor the passenger were wearing a seatbelt or helmet.

The crash remains under investigation, and charges are pending.

The VSP reminds riders to use appropriate safety measures when operating an ATV.
