Fatal fire 'not suspicious' as VSP investigates

BIG STONE GAP — The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Wytheville Field Office is looking into a fatal house fire that occurred early Wednesday in Wise County. 

The VSP said Wise County Emergency Services was notified at 1:47 a.m. of the fire in the 200 block of Railroad Avenue East in Big Stone Gap. Upon extinguishing the blaze, fire officials located the remains of Glen D. Messer, 60, in the residence. 

The VSP said the fire does not appear to be suspicious, but the cause and origin of the blaze remain under investigation.

Messer’s remains were transported to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Roanoke for examination and autopsy.
