ROGERSVILLE — A Johnson City man accused of threatening to kill his mother and two of her friends so there would be no witnesses was in court Monday to answer several charges, including three counts of aggravated kidnapping.

Manuel Caleb Andrew Frank Riner, 25, 1402 Meadow Brook Drive, Johnson City, was scheduled for a preliminary hearing Monday in Hawkins County Sessions Court, but the hearing was postponed until July 18.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred on May 6 at the residence of Riner's mother, Carol Derrick, on Goshen Valley Road near Church Hill.

Around 10:30 p.m. that night, Hawkins County deputies responded to an unwanted guest complaint at Derrick's residence, but when they arrived they found Riner seated at the kitchen table with a loaded .40 caliber Springfield XD in his right hand.

Detective Chad Britton said he drew his service weapon and ordered Riner to drop the gun, and Riner complied. The gun was then seized by Britton, and Riner was handcuffed.

Riner reportedly smelled of alcohol and stated that he had consumed “several shots.”

The three women each said that Riner entered the residence uninvited and ordered them at gunpoint to sit at the kitchen table and place their cell phones on the table.

"All three said that Riner pointed the gun at them and told them that they were not allowed to leave," Britton said. "At some point (Riner) told them he was going to have to kill them because he had come to kill Derrick and could not leave any witnesses."

When deputies seized the gun, they reportedly found a bullet in the chamber and 10 rounds in the clip.

Britton said the only motive for the alleged threat against his mother was an apparent dispute that dates back to Riner's childhood, but the details of the dispute weren't available.

Aside from the three counts of aggravate kidnapping, Riner was charged with aggravated burglary and possession of a handgun by an intoxicated person.

Riner remains free on $25,000 bond.
