ROGERSVILLE — A Rogersville bank teller accused of taking more than $10,000 from the accounts of eight elderly customers last year was named in a Hawkins County Grad Jury sealed indictment Monday.

Shannon Nichole Smith, 39, 606 Scott Street, Rogersville, was booked into the Hawkins County Jail Wednesday morning on one count of theft over $10,000, a Class C felony punishable by 3-6 years if convicted.

Smith was a teller at the Rogersville branch of Appalachian Credit Union when on June 7, 2016, a coworker allegedly observed her take $2,000 from the teller drawer and place it in her purse.

She then tried to leave the building, at which time she was confronted, returned the money, and was fired.

A subsequent investigation revealed that Smith had allegedly taken a total of $10,600 from eight elderly customers beginning around March 1 of last year and continuing until she was caught June 7.

Each of the customers were between the age of 72-90.

Rogersville Police Department Detective Charlie Gibson said each of the alleged thefts were caught by bank video surveillance.

During those thefts Smith would allegedly conduct a withdrawal for a customer who wasn't in the building, and then either place the funds in her own account or place cash into her purse.

“Every one of the victims was over the age of 70, and I imagine that was a factor on how she chose which accounts to steal from,” Gibson said. “All of them are good people and were friendly to her when they came into the bank, and I believe that's got a lot to do with how she chose them as well. Some people she took more than others, and sometimes it was in small increments. It just so happened the particular time she was seen by a coworker she was taking a larger amount.”

Smith was released from the Hawkins County Jail Wednesday morning on $30,0000 bond.

Her arraignment is scheduled for April 27 in Hawkins County Criminal Court.
