WISE — Police say a wanted Big Stone Gap man took to the freezing water to avoid being captured, but wound up in jail following a trip to the hospital.

According to Lt. Charles Sanders of the Wise County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to assist the Appalachia Police Department in the hunt for a fugitive who had fled on foot near Inman Village Apartments late Friday.

Matthew Jackson Taylor, 29, 3932 Stewart St., was wanted on two outstanding felony probation violations and one misdemeanor capias.

Deputies arrived on the scene with K-9 Jekyll to conduct a search. During the track, officers found a white bag full of what appeared to be synthetic drugs and syringes in the area where Taylor had fled.

The K-9 team located the subject in a stream. He was taken into custody without incident. Due to his exposure to freezing temperatures and cold water, Taylor was taken to Mountain View Hospital for treatment of possible hypothermia.

He is currently being held in the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Duffield without bond. The seized items will be sent to the state forensic lab for identification.
