KINGSPORT — The Kingsport Police Department responded to more calls in 2017 than in the previous year and  investigated about the same number of cases while maintaining a clearance rate of 77 percent — the same rate achieved in 2016.

This information and more can be found in the KPD’s annual report, which was released to elected officials and the public last week.

The report includes a brief history of the department, an overview of the various divisions within the KPD and statistics on crime, traffic crashes, arrests, response times and promotions that occurred during the previous year.

“We’re trying to use technology and geo-mapping to figure out and identify where hot spots are in the city,” Police Chief David Quillin said. “We then disseminate those at roll call and encourage our officers, if there’s a particular hot spot in their sector, to be more proactive in those areas. That’s what caused the number (of calls) to go up.”
