UH boys win third straight district golf championship

ELIZABETHTON — For a third straight year, University High’s boys golf team left Elizabethton Golf Course as district champion.

Led by individual medalist Lucas Lowe’s 7-over 79, the Bucs rolled to their third straight title Monday in the Small Schools District 1 tournament.

Garrett Gentry and Matthew Carter were second and third individually after rounds of 80 and UH won 323-342 over Hampton, which was runner-up for a third straight year. Daxx Carr added an 84 to the team score..

“I’m really proud of our guys. The conditions were good today and the course was in good shape although the heat dried it out and took a little adjustment,” Bucs coach Justin Penley said. “I thought our kids stayed focused and continued to grind.

“I’m proud of Lucas and what he was able to accomplish. He has taken our team to a new level. In nine-hole matches, he’s been consistently in the mid-30s. He was able to translate that to an 18-hole match. Matthew had an eagle on the front nine and that really helped us get off to a great start.”

Lowe credited his game off the tee and his iron play for his low round. With the lack of rain over the past few weeks, the greens were playing fast even with the course staff keeping them watered. Lowe, who finished with one birdie, said opportunities to make putts were at a premium.

“My irons were working for me today. I was able to hit a lot of greens and that simplified the putting process,” Lowe said. “My driver was also working, which was key because it’s a tough course to putt on. There was no middle ground with the greens. You were either putting uphill or straight downhill.”

Mitchell Tolley shot an 84 to lead Hampton. Avery Hill finished with an 84, followed by Izaak Hill with an 85 and Josh Owens with a 90.

Johnson County, led by brothers Petie and Peyton Pavusek, finished third in the team standings.

Jacob Cross shot a 91 to lead a Sullivan North duo that included Dale Potter.

GIRLS COMPETITION

Chuckey-Doak rolled to its second straight girls title, 197-223 over runner-up Unaka.

Individual medalist Kairus Tallman shot a 94 and Madison Painter added a 103 for the Lady Knights. Unaka had a 105 from Sadie Shoun and a 108 from Zoie Grindstaff.

Hampton finished third with Jayln Hill and Ashley Woodby combining for a 248. University High’s Quinn Scheller finished with a 121 as an individual.

All the participants qualified for next Monday’s region tournament, also set for Elizabethton Golf Course.
