Van der Biest wins first match at SentryWorld

STEVENS POINT, Wis. — Kingsport’s Isabella van der Biest won her first match in the U.S. Girls Junior golf championship Wednesday, defeating Julia Misemer of Overland Park, Kansas, 4&3 at SentryWorld.

Van der Biest was seeded 48th in the 64-player field for match play after two rounds of stroke play qualifying. The 17th-seeded Misemer led by one hole through No. 8. Van der biest then got hot, winning four holes in a row, including the last three with birdies.

That put her three up and she closed out the match on the 15th hole. Van der Biest was 4 under par when the match ended.

Van der Biest will face Anne Chen of Sugarland, Texas, in the round of 32 Thursday at 8:09 a.m. Chen is seeded 48th and upset 16th-seeded Hsin-Yu Lu 4&3 on Wednesday.

Thursday’s morning winners will go out again and play in the round of 16 in the afternoon.
