Tribe's van der Biest tied for sixth after Day 1 of U.S. Girls Junior Championship

STEVENS POINT, Wis. — Kingsport’s Isabella van der Biest shot a 3-under-par 69 on Monday to sit four shots off the lead after the first round of the U.S. Girls Junior Championship at SentryWorld Golf Course.

The rising Dobyns-Bennett junior closed her round by birdieing three of her final five holes. Van der Biest was tied for sixth; the top 64 after Tuesday’s second round of stroke play advance to match play.

Yuka Saso, an 18-year-old from the Philippines competing in her fourth U.S. Girls Junior, opened with a 7-under 65 to lead the field by three on a day 19 players bettered par.
