Van der Biest qualified for the U.S. Girls Junior Championship with her third-place finish Tuesday in the sectional qualifier at Cartersville Country Club.
Van der Biest shot a 1-under 71 and finished in a three-way tie for third in the one-day tournament. The top five finishers and first two alternates qualified for the 156-player USGA event scheduled for July 22-27 at SentryWorld Golf Course in Stevens Point, Wisconsin.
Joining the rising Dobyns-Bennett junior as qualifiers were Megan Schofill of Monticello, Florida, who topped the field at Cartersville with a 5-under 67; Ainsley Cowart of Winston, Georgia, who shot a 2-under 70; Iris Cao of Duluth, Georgia, and Savannah Hylton of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, who matched van der Biest with 71s; and alternates Sophia Burnett of Bluffton, South Carolina, and Jayna Choi of Collierville. Burnett shot 72 and Choi had a 73.
Kara Carter, a rising junior at Sullivan South, finished just out of the mix with a 2-over 74.
Earlier this month, van der Biest won the Tennessee Section PGA Junior to qualify for the Girls Junior PGA Championship on July 9-12 at Keney Park Golf Club in Hartford, Connecticut.
