BIG STONE GAP — The state belonged to Region 1C Monday.

Region 1C champion George Wythe shot a 310 at Lonesome Pine Country Club to win the VHSL Class 1 golf championship.

Auburn, the Region 1C runner-up, finished second in the state championship with a 327.

George Wythe’s Channing Blevins shot a 73 to capture medalist honors and teammate Dylan Boothe shot a 78 to finish in the top seven. Peyton Coe added a 79 and Daniel Goode an 80 for the Maroons.

George Wythe co-head coach Danny Suthers said the day was a good day for his team, although it could have been better.

“We’ve shot a couple of practice rounds here that were under 300,” Suthers noted, whose team features three sophomores and two juniors.

He said a couple of factors slowed his team a little.

“The weather got up. It’s a nice course and you get in trouble easy off the tee if you’re not hitting it straight. Basically, it was the wind and nerves,” Suthers said. “They’re young kids. We’re getting everybody back next year.”

The course played well for several golfers Monday.

Behind Blevins’ 2-over-par 73, six others – including Wythe’s Boothe — earned all-state honors.

Auburn’s Carter Vance and Jentzen Gore each shot 75 to lead their team.

Craig County’s Noah Miller also had a 75, and Rappahannock’s Reed Thorne and Galax’s Hunter Bowers matched Boothe’s 78.

Rye Cove’s Tyler Starnes had an 83 to lead the trio of Region 1D golfers. He finished five strokes off the pace of all-state honors.

Castlewood’s Coleman Cook shot a 94 and Rye Cove’s Michael Griffin had a 111.

Behind George Wythe and Auburn, Central Lunenberg — led by Hogan Whitlow’s 82 — finished third with a 344.

Montavious White shot an 82 and Logan Cooke an 83 to boost Essex to a 351 total and fourth-place finish.

Thorne’s 78 led Rappahannock to fifth-place spot with a 353.

Region 1D champion Holston, led by Dylan Thompson’s 88, finished with a 367.

William Campbell (379) was seventh and Region 1D runner-up Chilhowie (391) eighth. Noah Barr’s 94 was tops for the Warriors.
