D-B girls capture region golf title, secure state berth

JONESBOROUGH — Katerina Scott knew the moment Dobyns-Bennett could be on its way to capturing the Large Schools Region 1 golf championship.

Needing to finish strong, she hit an approach shot that landed just a couple feet away from the pin on hole No. 14. That led to her score of an 80, which combined with a 74 by individual medalist Isabella van der Biest, gave the Lady Indians a 154 total and a seven-stroke victory over Tennessee High on Thursday at the Blackthorn Club.

The win also qualified D-B for next week's state tournament in Manchester.

"My long game was going well, but the putts weren't falling all day," Scott said. "On No. 14, I felt an entire shift. Noelia Adkins, she was like on the fringe. I hit my third shot, my approach shot, and it was attacking the pin. It landed 2 feet away from the hole. I got chills at that moment. I knew we had a really good chance. I feel so lucky after three years that we get to go to state again as a team."

She wasn't the only one excited about going to the state as a team. Both van der Biest and Erin Colhoun, whose score didn't count toward the team total, were beaming with excitement.

It was a standout round for van der Biest, who is committed to play collegiately for Alabama. Before going to Tuscaloosa, she's glad to have unfinished business in the Volunteer State.

"It's great to go as an individual, but I'm glad we get to go as a team. It's exciting and should be a lot of fun," van der Biest said.

She was strong and, more importantly, accurate on the tee Thursday. The greens were fast after being mowed and rolled by the Blackthorn maintenance crew.

"My drives were really good. I hit a lot of fairways," van der Biest said. "My lag putting was pretty good, so it gave me two putts. The greens were a little faster and they healed up well considering they had just been punched."

Kara Carter of Sullivan South finished second individually with a 77. Also qualifying for state as individuals were Lily Self of Tennessee High and Gracie Johns of Morristown East, both of whom shot 80.

South, also with Erin Musick and Karli Goff, finished fifth in the team standings.

Several played as individuals including Lillian Qin of Science Hill with an 86, Mackenzie Miller of Daniel Boone with a 90, Abigail Delaney of Sullivan East with a 93, along with Grace Smith of Science Hill, Kennedy Cowan of Cherokee and Kim Gibson of Volunteer.

Science Hill had a team total of 298 to romp to its fourth straight region boys title.

Jackson Skeen led the way with a 3-under 69. Carter Counts and Tarun Hoskere each posted a 2-over 74 and Gavin Nickels rounded out the scoring with a 76.

Cooper Hayes of Carter was the individual medalist after a 5-under 67. Carter and Morristown West tied for second at 321.

Dobyns-Bennett’s team of Taylor Kilgore, Zac Fletcher, Spencer Correll, William Karst and Luke Lett finished fourth at 323.

Volunteer freshman Jon Wes Lovelace (70), Tennessee High’s Jack Tickle (72) and Hayes qualified for state as individuals.

"My irons were really good and I was able to keep it in the fairway," Lovelace said. "I made some putts, but I also missed some or I could have shot a lower score."

Other individual scores saw Sullivan East’s Randy Warren shoot 83, Daniel Boone’s Hunter Adams 85 and Casey Whiting 91, and South’s Drew Creech 95.
