MURFREESBORO — A runner-up finish to a record-shattering winner is nothing to hang your head about.

Kara Carter, a rising sophomore at Sullivan South, turned in a 1-under-par 215 to finish second to runaway winner Ashley Gilliam on Thursday in the 55th Tennessee Girls Junior Amateur at Old Fort Golf Club.

Gilliam, a native of Manchester who is bound for a collegiate golf career at Mississippi State, won her second consecutive state junior title by finishing 15 under par following a 6-under 66 closing round. She broke the tournament records for lowest final-round score and lowest final 36 holes (134) and tied the marks for lowest overall round and lowest overall round under par.

Carter posted rounds of 74-69-72 to finish one shot better than McKinley Cunningham of Clarksville.

Dobyns-Bennett’s Isabella van der Biest made the top 10, recording an eighth-place finish after rounds of 76-74-79.
