ROGERSVILLE — The emergency food pantry at Rogersville's Of One Accord ministry is receiving some new paint and polish, as well as a new refrigerator as part Food Lion’s fourth annual "Great Pantry Makeover."

Of One Accord's Rogersville food pantry is one of 30 across Food Lion's 10 state service area to receive a makeover which included donations of materials and labor for cosmetic  improvements, as well as a new industrial size double door side-by-side refrigerator.

Food Lion also surprised Of One Accord Thursday by trucking in more than 1,500 pounds of food donations including fresh produce, canned goods, and frozen meat. The overall donation was valued in excess of $6,000.

During a ceremony Thursday, Food Lion spokesperson Raechelle Pettaway said Of One Accord was chosen for this honor over other Northeast Tennessee pantries due to its high volume of food distributed, and the large number of people served.

"This year we want pantries to be able to receive more fresh donations, and then in turn get those fresh donations out into the community for people that need it," Pettaway said. "Today we've donated carrots, onions, potatoes, but then we've also thrown in some essential items like vegetable and cooking oil, and canned goods that we know will come in handy with the Holiday Season. We have Thanksgiving coming up next week."

Aside form donating the new refrigerators, Food Lion also contributed funds to refinish the Rogersville food pantry's floor, paint for the walls, new shelving and a donation for 1,561 pounds of food.

Area Food Lion employees also spent the day in working in the Rogersville food pantry.

In addition to the more than $6,000 in donations, Of One Accord also received the honor of being named the “Food Lion Feeds” program's number one food pantry in Northeast Tennessee for 2018.

Ministry director Sheldon Livesay accepted the plaque "in recognition of helping to end hunger in our community."

Of One Accord has food pantries in Rogersville, Church Hill and Sneedville, serving all of Hawkins and Hancock counties.

Overall Of One Accord serves abut 31,000 people per year with groceries, as well as about 6,500 hot meals served from the Rogersville kitchen, and another 12,500 meals per summer in the summer Lunch Box child feeding program.

"We're all about food and all about feeding the hungry here in our area," Livesay said. "Thank you on behalf of all of us, and on behalf of all of those you will have served through this food going out."

The Rogersville food pantry makeover is one of 30 conducted by Food Lion over its 10 state service area.

Food Lion chose Of One Accord for the makeover over three other Northeast Tennessee food banks that were also nominated by Second Harvest Food Bank.

"It wasn't hard for us to recognize that they were the agency that needed to be awarded this campaign for this year," Pettaway said. "We're excited for them to have it, and to see everyone else excited for you. This is our fourth year for this program and this year we want to focus on agencies that could use an expansion on providing fresh product to their community. Being able to provide them with refrigeration, or even produce carts for some of our agencies was helpful."

Pettaway added, "We were just amazed by the amount of food that comes out of this building, and the amount of people you serve in a tight-knit community. That's amazing, and that's what really stood out to us."
