Wind, rain can’t stop Halloween festivities

ROGERSVILLE — High winds and torrential rain are no deterrent for costumed kids in search of a perpetual sugar buzz.

Rogersville Trunk-or-Treat organizers managed to squeeze hundreds of youngsters and their parents into a local event venue where 23 “trunks” that had been planned for an outdoor event were able to shrink down to indoor booth size.

The event, which originally planned for 50 trunks and as many as 3,000 children along Main Street in downtown Rogersville, was moved indoors into Occasions on Main at the corner of Main Street and Depot Street.

Technically, the trunk and crowd numbers were a little smaller, but you wouldn’t know that if you attended the event Thursday evening, where it was wall-to-wall people on the inside — and folks lined up around three of the four walls to get in on the outside.

It started at 5 p.m. and by the time the costume contest was over at 6:45 p.m. they had served about 800 children. The final tally wasn’t available late Thursday.

The best-decorated trunk contest moved forward with Promise Medical Group’s “Candyland” taking first place; followed by Holston Electric’s “Frog and the Princess” in second; and the Hawkins County Sheriff’s office in third with its “Supervillain Jail” featuring The Joker, Lex Luthor, Superman, Batman and Robin and Wonder Woman.

As for the children’s costume contest, it was a bit chaotic with everyone squeezed into the entrance lobby,  but the judges managed to make their decisions.

In ages 0-3: Taco wagon girl won, followed by Raggedy Ann and Andy in second and Old Man in third.

In ages 4-7: Mad Scientist won, followed by Scarecrow Girl in second and Hocus Pocus Sisters in third.

In ages 8-12: Forrest Gump and Friends won, followed by “Cereal Killer” in second and Maleficent in third.

Unfortunately, it was a bit like herding cats in there and it wasn’t possible to get all the winners’ names, but you can see photos of all the winners in the online version of this article at www.timesnews.net.
