This family friendly event allows Fun Fest goers to decorate city sidewalks. The event is open to all ages and artists of any kind. The artistry kicks off at 9 a.m., with judging for the competition to begin at 11.
There will be first, second and third place prizes, along with some giveaways. There will also be an area where you can draw without entering the competition.
Registration is $10 for an individual and $30 for a family of four.
“We had 15 people last year. We thought that was really good for our first year,” said Kevin Jones, president of Select Seven Credit Union. “We welcome artists of all kinds: portraits, cartoons. If they like to doodle, if there’s a tattoo artist that wants to do some sidewalk art, that would be great. We think Kingsport has so much different talent, and this is a way to showcase it.”
The walk will be held in conjunction with Busker Fest, Fun Fest’s international street fair. Jones said this will allow for a more comprehensive experience for Chalk Walk participants, as other activities will be going on at the same time. There will be street performers, live music, food trucks and a kids area as part of Busker Fest.
“Last year we were a standalone Fun Fest event, but this year we joined forces with Busker Fest. We hope to add to each other’s event,” said Jones.
In case of bad weather, a rain date is set for July 20. Chalk will be provided, but other supplies are welcome.
“People can bring their own chalk, brushes, whatever, but we will supply a box of chalk to get them started. It is amazing to see what people with artistic talent can do with chalk. It doesn’t have to be professional. We’re looking for any and all wanting to participate,” said Jones.
“We’re kind of beginners in the Chalk Walk, but we hope it will grow this year,” said Jones. “It is a fun event. We had a great time last year. This is our contribution to Kingsport. Our staff really takes it to heart.”
