For example, Church Hill Intermediate School held a food drive for the Church Hill Food Pantry in honor of Hixson.
The school gathered 1,212 pounds of including 1466 cans, with Casey Carter's homeroom collecting the most food. As the winners, Mrs. Carter's class had the privilege of presenting Hixson with the results of the drive.
The CHIS “Appreciation Team” also organized a potluck meal for Hixson, and the faculty and staff enjoyed spending time with him. Student Ambassadors created a video for Hixson to show their appreciation as well.
“I greatly appreciate all of the time and effort related to gathering, receiving, and organizing supplies for those in need within our county,” Hixson told the Times News earlier this week. “I also appreciate this effort on my behalf. I can’t think of a higher honor than to have these necessary supplies donated in my name. What a blessing it is to work with such caring students and staff.”
Other examples of how Hawkins County Schools celebrated Superintendent Appreciation Month include:
Mount Carmel Elementary
The MCES “A-team” (Appreciation Team) made morning announcements throughout the month to remind students to participate in a food drive for the Hawkins County Resource Center in honor of Hixson.
Team members collected food each day and tallied items to determine which class brought in the most items. The school collected 902 items in Mr. Hixson's honor, with Mrs. Larkins' classroom bringing in the most the most with a total of 156 items.
The fourth-grade created a slide show of pictures of students for Mr. Hixson with thankful messages. Part of the A-team sang to him as well.
Students donated money for the school’s benevolence fund. Funds were donated by voting for their favorite “Turkey Teacher.”
Congratulations were then given to Mrs. Skeen for being this year’s Turkey Teacher. The message from the school was, “Thank you, Mr. Hixon, for all you do for our schools and students. We appreciate you.”
Surgoinsville Middle School
Surgoinsville Middle School students recently had a food drive in honor of Mr. Hixson. The “Links of Love” on the school Christmas Tree (see photo gallery) represent the number of cans each house in the school brought in his honor.
McPheeters Bend Elementary
Mcpheeters Bend said a big “Thank You!” to Hixson with a special ceremony in the gym on Appreciation Day.
MES donated 578 items to the Mooresburg Community Association food pantry. The MCA is a non-profit organization that provides cooked meals to over 100 community members daily, and in making the contribution students expressed the message, “We are very thankful for Mr. Hixson and the work he does for our county.”
In honor of Director Hixson during Superintendent Appreciation Week, Central Office staff collected coats, mittens and scarves to be donated to the Family Resource Center. These items will be given to students needing warm clothing during the winter months.
