BLOUNTVILLE — A trio from Sullivan County Schools took home a gold medal from the recent SkillsUSA competition in Louisville.

Sullivan County Schools took home gold in the Chapter Display category.

The Sullivan Central High School team of Amanda Meadows, Rachel Moody and Ethan Plummer, all graduated seniors, took first among 32 entries with a 99 percent score. The instructor for Moody and Plummer was Lloyd Putney, while the instructor for Meadows was Rhonda Flanary. The trio and others who competed nationally June 24-28 posted wins in the Tennessee SkillsUSA competition in Chattanooga March 31 to April 3.

“A chapter display is a contest that allows students to showcase their carpentry, electrical and mechanical skills that best represents the student club, SkillsUSA,” said Aaron Flanary, facilitator of career technical and post-secondary education for the county school system. “Seniors at the time, Central graduates Amanda Meadows, Rachel Moody and Ethan Plummer designed and built a state winner, and now they have earned top honors by winning a SkillsUSA gold medal as national winners.”

All told, 11 students and a student model came from Sullivan County Schools to compete this year in nine events. All 11 competitors got in the Top 15 in the nation, and all from Sullivan Central made the top 10, Flanary said.

He said placing well at the nationals is an honor for all students.

“Many of the competitors are in career academies, trade schools or private schools,” Flanary said.

Central consistently does the best of all four county high schools. Three state winners, all from Sullivan East, could not attend the national competition, so their spots went to the next in line among state competition scores.

SkillsUSA serves more than 360,000 students nationwide in high school and post-secondary institutions, with more than 6,600 students competing at the national level this year in 103 individual contests.
